What are the advantages and disadvantages of hub motors?

Advantages of hub motors:
Advantage 1: A large number of transmission components are omitted, making the vehicle structure simpler.
Advantage 2: A variety of complex driving methods can be realized.
Since the in-wheel motor has the characteristics of independent drive of a single wheel, it can be realized relatively easily whether it is front-wheel drive, rear-wheel drive or four-wheel drive. Full-time four-wheel drive is very easy to implement on a vehicle driven by a hub motor.
Disadvantages of hub motors:
1. Although the quality of the vehicle has been greatly reduced, the unsprung quality has been greatly improved, which will have a huge impact on the handling, comfort and suspension reliability of the vehicle.
2. Cost issues. The cost of high conversion efficiency and lightweight four-wheel hub motors remains high.
3. Reliability issues. Putting the precision motor on the hub will cause failures caused by long-term violent up and down vibration and harsh working environment (water, dust). Also consider that the hub part is the most easily damaged part in a car accident. Maintenance costs are high.
4. The problem of braking heat and energy consumption. The motor itself is heating up. Due to the increase of the unsprung mass, the braking pressure is greater and the heating is also greater. Such concentrated heating requires high braking performance.
