In terms of cost, the hub motor drive adopts an external rotor motor, and the drive unit, motor control module, braking system, lubrication system, cooling system, etc. are highly integrated, making it difficult to manufacture and maintain, complicated to install and debug, and high in cost.

In terms of design, the cooling and sealing requirements of the hub motor are more stringent, and the lubrication requirements of the wheel motor are more stringent. The in-wheel motor drive is highly integrated, while the in-wheel motor is relatively independent of the wheel, with small volume constraints and a wide range of power options, which increases the output performance of the vehicle. The design of the in-wheel motor drive is relatively difficult.
Through the good design of the suspension, the unsprung mass caused by the motor can be transferred to the body, the suspension system has good vibration isolation performance, and the stability of the wheel movement is increased; the replacement of wheel tires of the wheel motor and the maintenance of the motor are relatively convenient; For low-speed motors, there is no deceleration device, which requires high torque characteristics of the motor, while the drive of wheel-side motors is generally a high-speed inner rotor motor, which requires relatively low torque characteristics of the motor;
The wheel side motor is relatively independent from the wheel. Compared with the hub motor, its power selection range is wider, which reduces the unsprung mass and improves the driving stability of the vehicle. From the perspective of installation and debugging, the wheel motor is more convenient than the highly integrated hub motor.
